What is Comprehensive car insurance?
This covers you if your car is stolen, accidentally damaged or damaged by fire. You're also covered for claims made against you by other people for damage to their property or for bodily injury.

|Fair claim commitment||
Unlike some other insurers you can claim and your No Claim Discount is safe if the damage is caused by; potholes or poor road maintenance, theft from or of your car, being hit while parked, flood damage, if you hit or are hit by an animal, or hit by an object or debris (excluding vehicles).
With comprehensive cover as standard. Excess applies.
If you make a claim for damage to your car caused by vandalism, you won't lose your No Claim Discount.
The incident must be reported to the police and assigned a crime reference number. The excess must also be paid when making the claim.
|Used car replacement||
A choice between a replacement car like yours, a cash settlement or you can pay the difference for an upgrade, if your car is written off due to an accident, vandalism, fire or flood.
A minimum car purchase of £3,500 applies. An exact match may not be possible and is subject to availability. Excludes theft claims.
Medical expenses for each person injured after an accident, providing there's no cover in force under another car insurance policy.
Limited to £100 per person
|Uninsured driver promise||
If an uninsured driver damages your car in an accident, we will repay your excess and restore your no claim discount once we confirm that the accident was the fault of the uninsured driver. The circumstances of the claim type could affect the policy premium paid.
Registration number, make and model of the other car is needed to make a claim.
|Personal belongings cover||
Up to £250 for any loss or damage of clothing and personal belongings in the event of a fire, theft or accident.
Unlimited cover for fitted in-car audio, TV, telephone or navigation equipment, or up to £1,000 for non-standard equipment.
The cost of replacing or repairing a broken windscreen, sunroof or window.
By one of our approved repairers. Subject to an excess of £10 (if repairing) or £75 (if replacing).
Repair work is guaranteed for five years when using our approved repairers. Your car will also be cleaned inside and out before it's returned to you.
|New car cover||
If your car has been stolen or written off, we'll replace it with a new one of the same make and model if it's less than a year old and you're the first (and only) registered owner.
|Guaranteed Hire Car||
If your car is being fixed by one of our approved repairers, we'll get you a small hatchback to keep until it is fixed. Alternatively, if you prefer to use your own garage or your car has been written off or stolen, you'll still get a hire car for up to 21 days in a row.
Offered with Comprehensive Cover. Doesn't include windscreen claims or customer-delayed claims.
|Damage to third party||
If you cause an accident that damages someone else's car, property or injures someone, you'll be covered for subsequent claims made against you.
|24/7 emergency helpline||
If you've been in an accident and need help, our emergency helpline is always available to you.
|Fire & theft||
Financial protection if your car is stolen or damaged by an attempted theft, as well as any damage caused by a fire, lightning or explosion.
This covers you if your car or a third party's vehicle is accidentally damaged.
Designed to cover you or your spouse or partner in the event of a serious injury or death sustained while driving or getting in or out of any car.
Cover limits up to £5,000.
If your car can't be driven after an accident and a hotel stay is necessary, we'll pay up to £150 towards the expense (or £250 in total if there are other passengers with you).
|7 day car repair||
If our approved repairers can't fix your damaged car in seven days, we'll pay you £10 a day until the job is done, up to £70. Applies to Direct Line customers using our approved repairers loaded on our garage system, does not include public holidays. Available in mainland Great Britain, except Inverness and remote areas of Scotland.
Payment is from the 8th day and limited to £70. Excludes write-offs and windscreen claims. To meet our high quality and safety standards some repairers will take longer.
|Replacement child car seats||
The cost to have your child car seat replaced in the event of an accident, fire or theft, even if there's no apparent damage, as long as they are involved in a valid claim.
|No admin fees||
If you need to make amendments to your policy during the year, we won't charge you extra for it.
Any premium change because of that amendment may still apply.
Third Party, Fire & Theft cover
This covers you if your car is damaged by fire or stolen, and if other people claim against you for injury or damage to their car or property.
If you have a minimum of 4 years no claim discount, with no more than one fault claim within the past three years for all drivers combined, then you will be eligible to purchase No Claim Discount Protection.
Having No Claim Discount Protection means that your No Claim Discount (NCD) will not be affected by:
- One claim made during the current period of cover, or by
- Two claims arising in the three preceding years of insurance
You will cease to be eligible for the benefit if claims exceed the above number. However your premium may still increase following a claim.

We'll keep you moving with a similar physical sized hire car to your own, plus:
- Choose one of our approved repairers and you can keep it until your car is fixed.
- You'll still get a hire car for up to 21 days in a row if yours is written off, stolen or you prefer to use your own garage.
- We'll also cover the travel costs if your car is stolen or you have an accident abroad - up to £50 a day and up to a maximum of £500 over the 21 days following your claim, if you have extended your cover to that country.
