We explore some truly unusual places to lay your head.

Ice Hotel (Lapland, Sweden)

Open from mid-December to mid-April, the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjarvi, Swedish Lapland is unique. Everything from the bedrooms, suites, the bar, the wedding chapel and even many of the fixtures and fittings are built from snow and ice. The location is a great base for watching the Northern Lights, going on a whale safari and taking part in winter sports. If you find the idea of sleeping on a bed made from ice daunting (despite thick mattresses, reindeer skins and polar sleeping bags) don't worry, you can always de-camp to a warmer chalet or warm up in the sauna.

FantaSuite Hotels (USA)

The themed suites at this hotel range from Caesar's Court, which has a marble whirlpool, to Arabian nights where you can sleep in a Bedouin tent. Le Cave comes complete with cave paintings of dinosaurs and Cinderella has a bed in a horse-drawn carriage. For the romantics, Cupid has a heart-shaped bed and Lover's Leap includes a bed set into a 1973 Oldsmobile next to a park bench and picnic table. Our favourite is Space Odyssey, where the bed is inside a recreated Gemini Space capsule. Unlikely to win awards for tastefulness – but if you get to sleep in a spaceship, who cares?

Gamirasu Cave Hotel (Cappadocia, Turkey)

The Cappadocia region of Turkey is best known for the troglodyte caves built into the region's volcanic rock, which have been housing locals for over five thousand years. The 25-room Gamirasu was converted from seven of these old cave houses, some of which were still part of a monastery until recently. The 4,000-year history more than makes up for the lack of mod cons.
