Travel insurance - Tips & Advice - Holiday planning guide

This year on Mothering Sunday, March 22, why not go for the ultimate gift and book your mum (and yourself!) a break away. Remember to update your travel insurance before leaving the UK.

Weekend in Paris on the Eurostar
Whisk your mum away for the weekend to ‘gay Paree’ and stay at the stylish and elegant Hotel Lumen. After dinner at a stylish bistro, such as Le Meurice or Taillevent treat her to a night out at the Opera National or take a Bateaux Mouches boat trip along the Seine. To find out what’s on, visit Time Out’s Paris website.

Daytrip to Bath
Designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Bath boasts some of the most beautiful architecture in Europe. It’s also perfect for strolling around with lots of good restaurants and independent shopping boutiques. To finish the day off, treat your mum to some pampering at the famous Bath spa home to natural thermal waters.

A day at the seaside
A spring day by the English seaside can be by turns blustery, charming and surprising. Fly a kite at Saunton Sands in Devon, followed with a cream tea at the Saunton Sands hotel on the hill. Or visit Cromer in Norfolk, and take in an ‘end-of-pier’ show at the Pavillion Theatre. Or how about Whitby in Yorkshire, with its cliff-top ruined abbey and cobbled streets below?

A long weekend in Venice
Ride a gondola through the tangled network of Italy’s most famed waterways and bask in the atmosphere and charm of one of Europe’s most unique cities. As a one-off treat, consider treating your mum to a night at the Hotel Cipriani, regarded by some as the finest hotel in the world.

Farndale Daffodil Walk, North York Moors
Instead of buying cut flowers, go on a walk through the beautiful Farndale valley, which in spring is full of wild daffodils reputedly planted by the monks of nearby Rievaulx Abbey. At the end of the one-mile walk, which starts at the hamlet of Low Mill, take refreshment at the Daffy Caffy or the local inn in High Mill.

5 best Mother’s Day experiences

Your mum will love these UK days out with a twist.

Lunch or afternoon tea on the Orient Express
Rather than taking your mum to any old tearoom indulge her with a fine lunch or tea on the Orient Express, where she can sip champagne in the luxury dining carriages as the beautiful English countryside rolls by the window. The three-hour round trip leaves from London, Liverpool, Crewe and Chester.

Cookery course at Ashburton Cookery School, Devon
Indulge your mum’s Masterchef ambitions by treating her to a day’s cookery course at the award-winning Ashburton Cookery School. Designed for all abilities, the courses place a strong emphasis on local, seasonal and organic food.

A weekend at Holbeck Ghyll Hotel, The Lake District
As well as the breathtaking views and walks, the hotel offers a Michelin-starred restaurant overlooking Lake Windermere. What’s more there’s a health spa, offering saunas, mud baths, Swedish massages, aromatherapy and luxury facials, what more could any mum want?

Gardening course at Cotton Manor Garden, Northamptonshire
For green-fingered mums, this really is the perfect treat. The courses held in the famous 10-acre garden extending down from the 17th-century manor house cover a range of horticultural topics and are aimed at keen amateurs. The garden is home to flamingos and a blue and yellow macaw parrot.

Go ape
For fun mums with teenagers, Go Ape adventure courses are an exhilarating outing for the whole family. What better place to bond than hanging from rope ladders, sliding across high wires, and swinging like Tarzan through the treetops (albeit attached by a harness at all times and under expert instruction). There are 21 Go Ape courses around the UK so finding one nearby shouldn’t be a problem.

Travelling further afield or planning a summer escape this year? Think ahead and make sure your travel insurance is updated before leaving the UK.
