Need travel insurance that covers you for an extended length of time? Perhaps you want to spend time with a friend or relative, explore a new country, or are even thinking of doing some temporary work abroad for a while? With Direct Line there are a range of long stay Travel Insurance policies that could work perfectly for you.

Direct Line can offer you three types of great value travel insurance, all of which could suit your needs if you are thinking of taking an extended trip. Single Trip insurance provides for one-off trips of up to 90 consecutive days(if you’re over 60, the maximum duration is 42 days) – great if you want to go for two to three months. Annual Multi Trip travel insurance gives you the freedom to take as many trips as you like during the year, with a total allowance of up to 120 days. However, the longest you can travel for in one trip is 42 days, so two-month trips would not be possible. Discoverer travel insurance is the option that gives you the most freedom if you want to travel for a long time. Choose the European option and you get cover for up to 365 days; choose Worldwide and you get cover for up to 550 days.

The key to making sure you are adequately insured is to work out the number of days you will be away before you go. If you think you may want to stay a little bit longer when you get there, try and factor this in too. It sounds simple, but there are limits to what you can do once you are away, so make sure you take out all the necessary cover before you go.

At Direct Line we want to make sure you have peace of mind for the duration of your stay. All our policies include cover for medical emergencies, personal possessions and personal money in case your property is stolen, cancellation and curtailment in the event of your trip being cut short due to the illness or accident of someone close to you, plus personal accident, personal liability and loss of passport. You can also apply for optional extras such as winter sports cover – ideal if you are going to do the ski season (note this option is not available on the Discoverer policy).

Direct Line’s Discoverer long stay travel insurance policy can also cover you if you are thinking of working abroad. This includes cover for a temporary work placement of up to 90 days, providing these jobs are not manual (construction work, for example), and do not involve the care of children or the use of machinery. So while we can’t offer you cover if you want to nanny for a year, we can insure you for bar work or fruit-picking jobs for up to three months – great ways to meet people while away on a gap year and finance your trip while away.
