Travelling for business or pleasure can take you to a variety of destinations around the world. With Direct Line you can get international travel cover on our Single Trip, Annual Multi Trip and Discoverer Travel policies.

To ensure you are adequately covered for the countries you are visiting, your geographical area needs to be specified on your Direct Line travel policy document – it is especially important to check this if you intend to hop between countries or continents, or make several international trips during the year.

Most countries are covered but there are some exclusions, including those areas where the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised against all travel. If you are not sure of an area’s status, check with the FCO  first.  If you want to know if you have the relevant cover, for an unplanned trip on an annual policy, for example, give us a call.

The personal possessions cover limit on the Discoverer policy is  £1,000 (with single item limit at £250 and the total valuables limit at £250). This applies as long as you travel within your specified geographical area (and this must be specified on your policy), so it’s good to know that you have some peace of mind if you are a victim of theft while abroad.

All Direct Line travel policies also cover each person named for £5 million worth of medical & emergency expenses abroad and personal accident to £25,000; plus you get cancellation and curtailment cover up to £5,000 per person (£3,000 for Discoverer) and provision for personal liability, delayed departure, loss of passport and legal assistance. This applies on an international basis.

Single trip and annual multi trip policies also cover for essential replacement items, abandoned journey and winter sports cover, if selected.

Direct Line’s Discoverer travel insurance is designed for those who want to go off for longer periods of time. If you are thinking of taking a gap year around the world, you will need international travel insurance. Discoverer covers you for international travel (subject to country exclusions) for trips of up to 550 days worldwide. You can also benefit from stopover cover if you are travelling to or from Australasia, Asia or Africa and want to check out other countries on the way. This cover lasts for 14 days, where the geographical area is not specified on your policy.

With Discoverer travel insurance, you are also covered for temporary casual work for up to 90 days at a time (not in the UK or Channel Islands). This includes popular gap year work such as bartending, waiting tables and fruit picking, but not manual (construction) work, any job involving the care of children (as a nanny, for example) or the use, installation or maintenance of machinery.

If something should happen while you are away, you can also contact us from anywhere in the world. Your policy document has a handy cut-out-and-keep card that outlines telephone and fax numbers for calling from the USA and Canada, South America and the Caribbean, and anywhere else in the world, or check our contact details online.
