Pet insurance - Tips & Advice - Keeping your pet safe
Up a tree
In their haste to chase a bird or squirrel up a tree, cats (and occasionally dogs) can sometimes overlook getting back down! Only when they reach a high branch do they become frightened and sit meowing until someone (often a fireman) climbs a ladder to get them down. If you are not a fireman always follow safe practice while using a ladder.
In a cat flap
Some dogs heads fit through a cat flap forwards, but not backwards. Sometimes fat cats only realise they no longer fit through a cat flap when they're stuck halfway through. If your fat cat or big-headed dog gets stuck in a cat flap: a) sorry we called it fat and b) try to grease its path. If that doesn't work call the fire brigade.
The shed
While you're pottering in the shed (or garage) a curious cat or dog can creep in unnoticed to watch what you're doing. Getting trapped can be dangerous for any pet so double check you're alone before leaving and locking up!
Outside the house
You closed a window when it started to rain but you didn't realise that the cat had popped out when you weren't looking, and is now going to spend the next few hours getting cold and wet while meowing at the back door. If you don't have a cat flap check your pet is indoors before shutting them out, especially before heading out for the evening or going to bed. A pet shut outdoors can become confused and might even run away.
In your trousers
If you have a ferret stuck in your trousers, you're probably involved in 'ferret-legging'. Do bear in mind the health and safety implications for both you and your ferret…
