First aid for pets

If your cat or dog has an accident or falls sick, some emergency first aid before you reach the vet could help save their life

Every day, pets around the UK suffer injury or illness from pet accidents or common pet health problems.

From small cuts, bites and ripped nails to broken bones, poisoning or seizure, initial emergency first aid could make a huge difference to your pet’s chance of recovery – in some cases it could be a matter of life or death.

Basic first aid kit

Visit the websites of the Blue Cross or Safer Pets for a list of basic kit to help you treat sick or injured pets. Don’t forget to include the phone numbers for your vet and pet insurance.

Protect yourself

Even the most placid pet can bite or lash out with sharp claws if in distress or fear, so make sure you muzzle your cat or dog before attempting to help them (obviously not if they have stopped breathing, see below).

Difficulty breathing

Check for a heartbeat by listening to the chest, where front legs meet ribs. If none is found, clear the airways and check again. It is possible to perform CPR – advice from the PDSA. Life-saving measures such as these should only be carried out if the absence of a qualified person.

Bleeding, cuts and abrasions

Apply strong, continuous pressure to site of bleed. Flush small wounds with saline or sterile warm water. Larger wounds may need bandaging, smaller ones simply antibiotic cream. Bite wounds may soon become infected so it’s important to see a vet immediately.

Poisoning and vomiting

Familiarise yourself with common poisons harmful to pets and their treatment. Any vomit containing blood or accompanied by pain is an emergency. However, some vomit can be usual – in many cases, withholding food for 24 hours can cure the problem. If you suspect poison, try to establish the source and see your vet immediately.

Fractures or broken bones

Move the animal as little as possible. Transport to vet using a blanket or large board. Support fractured limb or area by wedging with towels and blanket.
