It’s a sad fact, but most road accidents are caused by the driver making a mistake, and though 17-21 year olds account for only 10 per cent of drivers in the UK, they are involved in 20 per cent of the accidents.

This is why it costs so much to insure people who fall into this age group. But Direct Line don’t believe in penalising younger drivers unduly. What we do believe in is encouraging safer driving at reasonable cost.

Young drivers should consider carefully the car they choose to drive. Buying a car with an engine bigger than 1.4 litres is going to cost you more in road tax, and probably more in petrol costs too.

Be aware that adding extras such as spoilers, a rally-style steering wheel and extra-wide wheels may be fun and make your car more personal, but if they’re not recommended by the manufacturer they can affect the car’s warranty, increase the cost of your insurance and even be illegal – not to mention making the car harder to sell! Note that Direct Line will not insure a car owned by someone under 25 if it has been modified.

You’ll also find that our New Improved Car Insurance means that you are eligible for a No Claims Discount if you’re currently insured on your parents’ policy.
