Car insurance - Tips & Advice - Cars with the lowest CO2 emissions
Most people choose to buy a certain car because it looks good and is reliable, but an increasing number of motorists are now considering how much carbon dioxide (CO2) their new car will emit - in other words, how environmentally damaging it is.
Check the data online
For drivers looking to buy a new car, and who are concerned about the level of CO2 emissions the Department of Transport has produced Act On CO2, a helpful website to make your decision a little easier.
The data has been compiled by the DfT’s Vehicle Certification Agency, and, as well as listing the cars with the lowest CO2 emissions across the board, it also rates those that have the lowest emissions in their own category. So, if you simply must have a large 4x4, you can at least find out which one is the best (or ‘least worst’) when it comes to CO2 emissions.
Of course, the DfT is not making any recommendations about which cars to buy, but here are the ones that the site says have the lowest CO2 emissions:
- Volkswagen Polo 3/5 Door 1.4Tdi (80PS) with DPF BLUEMOTION, Diesel – 99g/km CO2
- Seat Ibiza 1.4 Tdi (80PS) Ecomotion, Diesel – 99g/km
- Toyota Prius 1.5 Wti-Hybrid, Petrol Hybrid – 104g/km
- Mini Cooper D Hatchback R56 with particle filter, Diesel – 104g/km
- Citroën C1 1.0i 3/5 door, Petrol – 108g/km
- Peugeot 107 1.0 (68bhp), Petrol – 109g/km
- Toyota Aygo 1.0 WT-I 3/5 door, Petrol – 109g/km
- Honda Civic Hybrid 1.4 IMA ES, Petrol Electric – 109g/km
- Skoda New Fabia and New Fabia Estate 1.4 Tdi 80PS Green-Line with DPF, Diesel – 109g/km
- Citroën C1 1.4Hdi, Diesel – 109g/km
- Mini Cooper D Clubman R55 with particle filter, Diesel – 109g/km
There are no guarantees that these cars are smooth and easy to drive or will turn heads, but if low CO2 emissions are important to you then they are all worth putting at the top of your list.
