Carbon Offset:

Sustainable timber in Mexico

Sustainable timber in Mexico

This forestry project operates in a number of ecological and cultural regions in Southern Mexico and aims to offset 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. The project now includes over 2000 families in 30 communities. Tree-planting includes the restoration of open pine forest that has been degraded in the past, enrichment planting to encourage the growth of naturally regenerating oak and boundary planting for timber and other products.

How it works

Farmers are trained, and then offered ongoing support to help them carry out the tree-planting that will best suit their needs and resources and the ecological conditions of the zone where they live.

When farmers are registered, they enter into sale agreements that specify the amount of carbon they will sell, as well as the conditions of sale.

This gives the farmers a valuable additional income, provides education and develops local capacity. The project also allows small scale farmers to gain access to Global carbon markets.
